Water Testing in Flower Mound
Before you spend anything on a filter or softener, find out what is really coming out of your tap. We test the water in your home, walk you through the results at your kitchen table, and tell you honestly whether you need equipment at all.
A test first, then a plain answer
Most people call us because something seems off. The coffee tastes flat, there is a pool smell at the shower, white crust is building on faucets, or a rust ring keeps showing up in the toilet bowl. Each of those points to a different cause, and each has a different fix. Guessing usually means buying the wrong system.
Our water testing gives you numbers instead of guesses. We check the things that drive real decisions, like hardness, iron, chlorine, pH and total dissolved solids, and we arrange independent lab work when a question calls for it, such as lead from older plumbing or a private well. Then we explain what the results mean for your home in everyday language.
Sometimes the honest answer is that your water is fine and a simple pitcher filter will do. We would rather tell you that than sell you something you will resent.
What your water test covers
Hardness reading
We measure calcium and magnesium in grains per gallon. This is the number that decides whether a water softener makes sense, so we never recommend one without it.
Iron and sediment check
Orange stains, gritty aerators and cloudy water often trace back to iron or sediment. We test for both and note whether the source looks like the supply line or your own pipes.
Chlorine, taste and odor
We check disinfectant levels at the tap. If taste or smell is the main complaint, this tells us whether whole-house carbon filtration or a drinking-water system is the better match.
pH and dissolved solids
These readings help explain spotting on dishes, scale in the water heater and corrosion in older fittings.
Independent lab samples when needed
For lead, bacteria on a private well, or anything we cannot read reliably at the sink, we collect samples properly and send them to an outside lab. You see the lab report, not just our summary.
A written results sheet
You keep a copy of every reading with a short note on what it means, even if you never buy anything from us.

Signs it's time to test your water
- Taste or smell changed
- A chemical or earthy taste that wasn't there last season is worth checking. Water can shift through the year, and a test shows what changed.
- Stains and buildup
- Rust-colored rings, blue-green marks under faucets or white scale on glass shower doors each point to something specific in the water or the pipes.
- Older plumbing
- If your home has original fixtures or you are not sure what the pipes are made of, a lead test gives you a clear answer for drinking and cooking water.
- Private well
- Well water is your responsibility, not the city's. Testing once a year, and after heavy rain or flooding, is a sensible habit.
- Shopping for a filter or softener
- If a salesperson is quoting equipment without testing first, get your own numbers before you sign anything.
- New baby or new house
- Many families like a baseline test when someone vulnerable joins the household or right after moving in.
How a water test visit works
- 1
A quick phone call
Tell us what you have noticed and how long it has gone on. We ask the age of your plumbing and if your home is on city water or a private well, so we pack the right test kits.
- 2
Samples from your taps
We normally sample at the kitchen sink plus one more spot, often an outside spigot ahead of any filter you have. We put on shoe covers and keep things neat.
- 3
Readings during the visit
Most results come back while we are still there. We sit with you, review each reading and flag anything unusual.
- 4
Lab results, if any
When samples go to a lab, we call you to walk through the report once it arrives.
- 5
A straight recommendation
If treatment makes sense, we lay out the choices, from iron and sediment filtration to under-sink reverse osmosis, and explain why one suits you better. If you need nothing, we tell you.
What sets the price of a water test
An in-home test and a full lab panel are not the same job, so the price depends on what you need checked. We go over your concerns by phone and give you the cost before the visit, so the day holds no surprises.
- What we are testing for
- Hardness, iron and chlorine readings at the sink are simple. Testing for lead, bacteria or a wider contaminant panel brings lab fees.
- City supply or private well
- Wells generally need bacteria testing and a broader panel, because no utility watches that water for you.
- How many places we sample
- Sampling before and after a filter you already have, or at several taps to trace a stain, takes more time.
- Testing again after treatment
- Some homeowners want a second test after a new system is installed to make sure it works. We can include that from the beginning.
Water testing questions we hear often
- Isn't city water already tested?
- Yes, the utility tests water at its treatment and distribution points, and that matters. What it cannot see is what happens in your own pipes and fixtures between the street and your glass. Our test looks at the water as it actually leaves your tap.
- Will you just try to sell me a system?
- No. The point of testing first is to avoid buying equipment you do not need. Plenty of visits end with us telling a homeowner their water is fine, or that a simple fix will do.
- How often should I test?
- For city water, testing when something changes or before buying equipment is usually enough. Private wells should be tested at least once a year. Many people like to check in spring, before the long summer stretch when the household uses the most water.
- Do I need to be home for the test?
- Yes, we need access to a few taps inside your home, and it helps to talk through the results together. Most visits are fairly short.
- Can testing tell me if I need a water softener?
- That is exactly what the hardness reading is for. A low number means a softener would add cost and ongoing salt refills without much real benefit, and we will show you the reading and say that plainly. When the number does justify one, our water softeners page explains how we size the system to your home.
- What if I already have a filter?
- We can test before and after it to see whether it is still working. If cartridges are spent, our filter replacement and maintenance service can get it back on track.
